What is Vedic Astrology?

Astrology has existed in one form or another throughout all cultures for many thousands of years as a model of the close relationship between the human being, the world that surrounds him, and the Divine. In India Astrology has been preserved as a form of spirituality and a way to connect and to revere the forces of the Universe.

The Vedas were written towards the end of the Age of Wisdom (Sat Yuga) and with the intention of preserving the wisdom gained in this most enlightened time in human history. The ancient sages of India weren’t the only ones to have this hidden knowledge. The Egyptians, various indigenous peoples of the Americas, the Druids, the Sumerians, and the Akkadians, to name a few, also possessed, or eventually gained access, to at least some aspects of it. However, it was the people of ancient India who best preserved this knowledge.

Also known as Jyotish, the primary purpose of Vedic astrology is to understand the influence of celestial bodies on human life and to provide guidance for living in harmony with these cosmic forces. Within its primary purpose, are imbedded the following four goals:

Jyotish is deeply rooted in ancient Vedic texts. There are four Vedas: the Rigveda (the oldest), the Yujurveda, the the Samaveda, and the Atharvaveda.

Veda means knowledge. In particular, it refers to the knowledge of the truth that applies to the mysteries of existence. The Vedas are a repository of knowledge that is made up of spiritual Hymns. These are not hymns that are sung in a congregational setting in a house of worship. Rather they are a narrative story in poetic form, similar to Homer’s The Iliad.

The Vedas do not just focus on astrology, they deal with virtually every aspect of life. However, in modern times, there has been a concentration on three areas, often referred to as the 3 pillars of Vedic wisdom.

However, this does not imply that other aspects of Vedic wisdom are unimportant. On the contrary, the Vedic tradition emphasizes balance, harmony, and continuous learning in all areas of our existence. The focus of Astrology Carolina obviously is on Vedic astrology, but I embrace all aspects of Vedic teaching and incorporate it into my practice.

What Vedic astrology is to me

The Vedas often are placed in the context of a religious doctrine. But I do not see this as an accurate and fair representation. Religious doctrine tends to be dogmatic and inflexible. I also do not completely agree with viewpoints that the Vedas are a comprehensive way of life. I do not believe that the Vedic scholars saw their philosophy as comprehensive, at least in the context that there was nothing left to learn. I think that they saw their philosophy as dynamic, capable of absorbing and adjusting to new knowledge. In this respect, Vedic philosophy could be thought of as a way of living abundantly with health and well-being without being dogmatic about it and maintaining flexibility to new knowledge.
